Lingerie That Honors Your Body and the Planet
- Sustainable Materials
I’ve selected a range of natural fibres (blended with about 5% spandex for lasting fit) for their breathability and soft, lived-in feel. Whether I’m working with soft organic cotton, durable hemp, silky Tencel™, quick drying merino wool, or hypoallergenic alpaca, my goal is to ensure your skin can breathe and that you stay comfortable all day long. Using these sustainable materials, I’m able to craft garments that are as kind to your body as they are to the planet.

about the fabrics
Cotton
Cotton is breathable, soft, and the gold standard for comfortable everyday underwear. Certified organic cotton must be grown without toxic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and synthetic fertilizers; Use non genetically modified seeds; Use natural fertilizers like compost and manure.
Hemp
Hemp is a sustainable and durable bast fiber harvested from the inner bark of high-growing Cannabis sativa stems. It grows like a “weed”, thriving on minimal water and requiring no pesticides or herbicides to stay healthy. Beyond its low footprint, hemp acts as a regenerative “soil healer” by breathing in large quantities of CO2 and returning carbon to the earth. Because it produces significantly more fiber per acre than cotton, it’s a highly efficient use of land that truly leaves the planet better than it found it.
Tencel™ Lyocell
Tencel™ Lyocell is created using a environmentally friendly closed loop process, transforming wood pulp into a silky soft fiber that is breathable, hypoallergenic, and provides great moisture control.
merino wool
Merino wool is a powerhouse of natural functionality. It is breathable, moisture-wicking, and thermoregulating, meaning it helps regulate your body temperature regardless of the weather. It is exceptionally talented at pulling moisture away from your skin and into the fibers, keeping you feeling dry and comfortable all day long.
alpaca
Alpaca is a luxury performance fiber that is soft, breathable, and naturally odor-resistant.
Since it contains no lanolin, it’s a perfect hypoallergenic alternative for anyone with wool sensitivities. It’s also good for the planet—alpacas are efficient feeders and gentle on the land, making this material as sustainable as it is soft.
Spandex
Spandex, (aka Lycra or elastane) is a synthetic material. All fabrics in this shop contain a small percentage (3%-10%) of spandex for comfort and elasticity. The stretch is essential in making undergarments that move with you, and hug your body comfortably. Tight fitting knit garments like underwear made without spandex quickly lose their shape.
fabric scraps
Fabric scraps are sorted and saved for cutting small pattern pieces, like bra cups. When remaining scraps are too small, they are donated to a fabric recycling program.

Natural Swimwear FAQ
What is natural or plastic-free swimwear made from?
While this natural swimwear is not 100% plastic free, it is made primarily from natural fibers including merino wool, alpaca, and modal. Most styles are approximately 95% natural fiber, with about 5% spandex, and elastics and straps include nylon and spandex for structure and durability.
This blend allows the swimwear to maintain shape, comfort, and longevity while still prioritizing natural materials.
What are the benefits of Alpaca and Merino Wool?
Both merino wool and alpaca are breathable, soft, and exceptionally low in moisture absorption—making them uniquely suited for swimwear. After swimming, they shed water quickly and feel dry to the touch, keeping you light and comfortable.
Merino is lightweight, versatile, and ideal for all-day wear. Ultrafine merino feel soft against the skin while naturally wicking moisture—making it a great choice for both swimming and movement.
Alpaca offers an ultra-soft, more luxurious feel. Its naturally hollow fibers help regulate temperature while repelling water, absorbing even less moisture than merino. It’s also hypoallergenic and rare in stretch fabrics.
The alpaca fabric is blended with modal—a plant-based rayon fiber—adding strength, stability, and durability, especially when wet.
Why not cotton?
While natural—and excellent for undergarments—cotton and hemp tend to feel cold when wet and retain a high amount of water, leading to a heavy, slow-drying feel after swimming.
Merino wool and alpaca behave differently, absorbing far less moisture and drying quickly for a lighter, more comfortable experience.
How do I care for my natural swimsuit?
Take gentle care of your swimsuit to help preserve its natural fibers:
- Rinse in cold water immediately after swimming
- Hand-wash in cold water, or use a gentle machine cycle in a garment bag (this keeps it from angling and magnets from hitting the machine)
- Hang or lay flat to dry in the shade
- Do not tumble dry
Can I use my merino or alpaca underwear as swimwear?
It’s not ideal.
While 95% merino wool or alpaca blend underwear will dry quickly, it may be see-through because it is made from a single layer of fabric, unlike the swimwear. Additionally, most underwear styles have little to no elastic in the seams, whereas swimwear includes elastics in the leg openings and waist for a secure fit.
Can I use my Hanna Broer 95% merino wool or alpaca blend bras for swimming?
Yes!
Since all Hanna Broer bras are made with a double layer of fabric and contain elastics to keep a good hold, you can use the 95% merino bras for swimming. The merino blends with Tencel™ may be less suitable, since they may be see though, and the merino content is much lower.
Can this natural swimwear be worn as underwear?
Yes!
Natural swimwear made from merino wool and alpaca is breathable and quick drying, making it a comfortable option for everyday undergarments. They have more hold and structure than most of the single layer underwear styles, which is great if you like a secure fit.
Is it possible to make completely plastic-free swimwear?
Not for a modern, stretchy swimsuit.
While advancements are being made in biodegradable materials, it is not currently possible to create snug-fitting, supportive, and durable swimwear without elastane (spandex) or synthetic elastics.
Does natural swimwear perform the same as synthetic swimwear?
No.
Natural swimwear is functional, comfortable, and breathable but will feel and behave differently compared to synthetic swimwear.
How do I know which items are suitable for swimming?
All items suitable for swimming are listed in the “swimwear” category.
